PeaGram Instrument Re-homing

Information on the PeaGram Musical Instrument Re-homing Project

What do we do?

The PeaGram Musical Instrument Re-homing Project, as the name suggests, collects, refurbishes and provides new homes for old musical instruments and musical equipment. The service is based in Colinsburgh and is the brainchild of a local musician: Pete Rabjohns.

Why do we do this?

Pete was helped and mentored by an older musician, from the age of 16. Over the next few years he gave Pete text books, advice and instruments to help develop his musicianship. This project is about “Paying Forward” that debt.

Pete believes:

  • that Music is an important part of human development, and influences most aspects of life.
  • that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy of learning to make music.

There are too many instruments that spend their lives under beds, on top of wardrobes or in attics!

People have asked Pete why he does it? He gives three reasons:

  1. Personal - To honour the memory of someone who helped me when I was young. Les Cartledge gave me a Xylophone (and many other things) when all I had was a piano keyboard drawn on a sheet of cardboard to help me with my Music "O" level.
  2. Read this BBC News article - Against a background of cuts to schools' music and tuition budgets, and parents facing a sudden £400 monthly hike in basic living costs (and it's going to get worse), some things have to go.  Instruments and private music tuition are among the first. As any musician will tell you, it's devastating to a child's development in many areas.
  3. Seen on a national scale, we can achieve very little and help very few. But we're trying, and that's got to be better than not trying

Is it free?

  • All the instruments and equipment we provide are completely free, they are yours to do with as you will.
  • If you find that for any reason you’re not getting on with the instrument, or outgrowing it, we can arrange to swap it for another, or even a different type of instrument.
  • If anything breaks or stops working, we can repair or replace it.
  • If you decide that learning to play an instrument is not for you, we would ask you to consider re-homing the instrument yourself or returning it to us to be refurbished and re-homed.
